Howard has been training police dogs for most of his adult life. A significant amount of that time has been as a direct employee of the Shelby Police Department in Shelby NC. In his time with the SPD, he procured many dogs and trained many successful K9 teams, maintaining them with weekly training for the life of those teams. Along the way he began working as an employee of the local sheriff’s office as their trainer. In 2018, Howard and his wife Lisa formed a corporation named White Beard K9, Inc., through which they no longer are directly employed with agencies, but now privately contract those same K9 training services, having added an additional nearby agency. He enjoys sharing his knowledge and experiences, hoping to impassion and broaden the skills of others to be successful in the world of working dogs. Howard’s latest venture has been co-hosting a podcast “The Working Dog Depot Podcast”, which he hosts with his good friend Rich Hardin. He conducts seminars when possible, and enjoys the travel, meeting new people in the K9 world and supporting their endeavors through training.
Rich has 25 years of experience in the dog world. He has held positions within Military Special Operations groups, been a consultant for a myriad of Law Enforcement agencies, written a variety of courses and trained 1000’s of pet dogs. He served as a police officer for over 20 years, holding positions as a K-9 officer, academy instructor, firearm’s instructor and SWAT team member. Rich is the founder of Double H Canine and Co-host of the Working Dog Depot Podcast.
STEPS TO EFFECTIVE ENGAGEMENT
A frequently asked question is, how can I ensure that my dog will engage a suspect when the time arises? Conventional wisdom suggests that preparing your dog for real world engagements involves a myriad of activities in order to remove any confusion for the dog. If we have done our due diligence and selected the right dog for job we must prepare the dog for battle. There are no shortcuts and it’s never just one thing that gets the job done. In this class Howard and Rich will share a recipe to prepare your dog for real world engagement. Note….the class explores a variety of techniques. In this industry many things are ever evolving, but many times techniques are cyclical and have away of coming back around again. Whether the technique is “new” or simply a “re-branded technique” it’s imperative that it’s done to fidelity.
